Livia’s Garden was made in response to my memories of seeing the beautiful painted gardens in Livia’s Villa, Rome. The paintings are of imagined gardens.
I wanted to convey the sense of delight of being in a garden, which can be many things to different people. Gardens can offer a space of joy, fun, peace, reflection and sometimes solace. I use gesture and immediacy to convey transience and fragility of the world we inhabit.
“A garden is a delight to the eye and a solace for the soul” – Saadi
“Nature doesn't hurry, yet everything is accomplished. ' A single seed planted, eventually becomes a garden in time – when things get tough, tend to the garden in your mind.” – Lao Tzu
“I came to a point where I needed solitude and just stopped the machine of ‘thinking’, ‘enjoying’ and what they call ‘living’ I just wanted to lie in the grass and look at the clouds.” – Jack Kerouac
